Case Study: SLA Places a Senior MD and Head of Shareholder Activism.
The Client: SLA’s client, headquartered in DC, is one of the largest financial consulting firms in the world. The firm specializes in the fields of corporate finance and restructuring, economic consulting, forensic and litigation consulting, strategic communications and technology. They sought SLA’s services to hire the head of shareholder activism and corporate governance.
Specifications: SLA received the mandate in 2018. The client wanted the candidate to have knowledge and expertise in a wide variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to investment banking, stewardship, and legal. The goal was to wade through a highly competitive market and make the placement before proxy season.
The New Hire: After thorough deliberation, 6 candidates were shortlisted, of which one was selected as the new senior managing director and head of shareholder activism and corporate governance. The new SMD previously worked as a Vice President at a proxy advisory firm.

Shareholder activism is a way for shareholders to effect social and/or administrative change in publicly-traded corporations. As partial owners, shareholders can influence a firm’s behaviour to ensure the firm remains inclusive, ethical, and efficient.
